8 Questions to Ask When Shopping for a New Mattress

When it comes to shopping for a new mattress, one of the main features you'll be looking at is mattress size. Naturally, your current frame and existing bedding will likely be the most significant factor in deciding what size mattress you'll be purchasing. If you aren't trying to match your existing mattress size and are looking for something different, our mattress experts here in Bozeman, Montana came up with 8 questions you should ask yourself:

What size mattress set will fit in your bedroom comfortably?

We generally think in terms of going with the largest mattress that will easily fit into the room.

Is there only one person in the bed?

While it's common for people to lean toward a Twin or Twin XL in this circumstance, a Full or even a Queen can offer more comfort because of the extra space to stretch out - especially for adults. Keep in mind that if room size dictates a Twin width, adding the extra 5" of length with a Twin XL allows a more spacious and comfortable sleeping situation for older kids and adults.

Are there two people in the bed?

In recent years, a Queen size mattress has been considered the minimum size for two people under most circumstances. Occasionally, we work with couples that prefer to sleep quite close to one another. A Queen set can be a good choice for them.

If one person is more sensitive to motion transfer on the bed, then a perfect solution is adding the extra width of a King or California King to help dampen the transfer of movement from side to side.

Are one or both sleepers "sprawlers" that like to use up a lot of square footage?

The extra width of a King can also be helpful here.

Do you have kids that like to crawl into bed with mom and dad?

On a lazy Sunday morning when the kids jump into your bed, a King mattress is perfect for providing that extra space!

Are the sleepers tall?

Then a California King mattress could be a great option.

Do your pets sleep in the bed?

While that is not a factor for some people, it's surprisingly common. While they don't seem like they take up much space, it's common for people to go with a larger mattress knowing their pets will jump in bed and take up some of the room.

How tall is your bed?

We recommend spending a few minutes considering the height of your bedroom set. Take a look at your current frame height, the height of the sleepers, and think about what height mattress/set would look best in frames with headboards or headboard/footboard setups.

It can be easy just to think about what size mattress you want, but while you are at it, spend a few minutes considering how tall you want the set to be. Consider your current frame height, the height of the sleepers, and what height mattress/set would look best in frames with headboards or headboard/footboard setups. It would also be a benefit to have a range of workable heights to help with choosing what foundation height will work best for your new mattress.
