Managing the Growth of Unstructured Data

Spread the love

Our Digital Footprint is Expanding Faster Than the Universe!

Back in the 1980s, there was a now-infamous quote: “640K ought to be enough for anybody.”  Of course, the thought of 640K being enough for anything today is ludicrous, but at the time few of us could envision where the future of data was headed. Since then, year after year, storage has been the subject of an annual increase in demand and innovation.

Society as a whole has an insatiable thirst for bigger, faster, more accessible storage options, at work and for personal use. Gartner predicts that worldwide consumer digital storage alone will have grown from 329 exabytes in 2011 to over 4.1 zetabytes by 2016. And corporations, government agencies and other organizations have an even greater appetite for data.

Knowing Your Data is Half the Battle…

If you know your data, chances are that you may be able to plan around your needs. I’d venture to say that almost all organizations have multiple pockets of data, some of which may even exist outside of IT’s knowledge or control. And this can be a problem. Compliance, protection of intellectual property, sensitive information, unauthorized access and simple deletion/data loss are all serious risks when you’re not properly managing your data.

For this reason, location and classification of data is crucial for enterprises. Specifically, enterprises need to know:

  • How and where is data stored?
  • Who can access it?
  • How is data accessed? Via storage area network (SAN), network-attached storage (NAS) or is it on local servers?
  • Is the data encrypted?
  • Are storage platforms performing as expected?
  • Are there metrics on data usage and access?
  • Is the data backed up reliably?
  • Does the data need to be synchronized at multiple sites? Across applications?
