Tips

Want to go the extra mile? Use Krylon paints and stencils to personalize your planter pot. For a "tree for two" use a Krylon Paint Pen and go old-school: Draw a heart with (His Name) + (Her Name) in the center. Teachers - use it in the classroom! Or are you a single gal? Why not throw your own "Single Girls-Night-Out Valentine's Party" instead of brooding away in your bedroom with a tub of ice cream? Put the names of each of your girlfriends on the hearts of the tree and let each other know that you are never alone!

How and How Long:

  1. Begin by tracing craft heart shapes onto various pieces of colored construction paper.
  2. Prime tree and craft hearts. Be sure to add several layers for good coverage as wood absorbs paint easily. The primer with help to enhance your colors and make painting a breeze. Let dry.
  3. Spray tree with Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper. While looking for good coverage, it is okay if some white primer shows through in small amounts on tips, in cracks, etc. as this will give the tree some highlights. Let dry.
  4. Hold trunk of tree with branches facing away from you. Spray Short CutsΠAerosol Paint in Hot Pink at the underside of tree. Concentrate paint on the underside curves of branches and add tonal quality to tree. Let pink and white hints show.
  5. To make your tree more magical, finish with Make It IridescentΠby saturating various branches.
  6. Spray hearts in complimentary colors using Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper, Short CutsΠAerosol Paint in Hot Pink, Short CutsΠAerosol Paint in Red Pepper, Krylon Premium Metallic Silver Foil and Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Paint in Cherry Red.
  7. Place tree in planter holding it up with any filler and topping filler off with colored and heart-shaped stones from the craft store.
  8. Hang hearts on tree with ribbons.
  9. Cut out construction paper hearts using your tracings as guides. Cut approximately 1/4" inside the lines. Use paper hearts to write notes and attach with removable tape to heart ornaments. Place extras nearby or scatter around tree for free use.
  10. Accessorize to your liking with a planter foil, string of beads, craft birds, fancy ribbons, or other special trimmings.
Approximate project time: 2.5 hours.
