Trumeau Mirror

I turned an old thrift store door into a trumeau mirror using pieces of trim, latex and acrylic paint and some Krylon Looking Glass spray paint.

What you need:

  • An old door with a glass window
  • Pieces of molding and trim paint
  • Krylon Looking Glass paint (4 or more cans, depending on the size of the window in your door)
  • Wood glue
  • All purpose cleaner
  • Glass cleaner
  • Finishing nails
  • Sandpaper clamps

How and How Long:

  1. Clean the door and the glass well. Decide if you need to to strip the door or just sand it lightly. Lead paint may be a problem if the door is old, so I'd recommend stripping it, unless the existing paint is in good condition. Then you can just leave it as is, only sanding the parts that you'll be gluing your trim to.
  2.  Decide on a design for your trim, cut, glue and clamp into place. Let the glue dry. You might want to use finishing nails on some of it to make it more secure.
  3. Fill any holes left my the finishing nails.
  4. Sand any rough spots.
  5. Paint the wood body of the door. Let dry.
  6. Turn the door over and spray the glass insert with your Looking Glass paint. Do a light layer and let it dry completely. You'll need to do several coats.
Approximate project time: All of this took me 2 days. Most of that time was just waiting for the wood glue and paint to dry before I could work on the next step.

What it Costs:

Cost is almost $30. I paid $5 for the old door with window, but prices vary trim and molding; about $25 for the Looking Glass spray paint. Everything else I used I had on hand.
