How and How Long:
- Using a sabre saw cut hardboard to size of shelf back.
- Using sandpaper, sand shelf and hardboard smooth. Wipe clean with soft cloth.
- For each spray painting step, place project on newspaper to protect work area. Use wax paper as a turntable. Follow all manufacturer's directions for spraying and drying times.
- Spray two coats of Primer on entire shelf and hardboard. Let dry thoroughly between coats.
- Spray three coats of Ballet Slipper on inside of shelf and one side of hardboard. Let dry between coats. Let dry thoroughly.
- Using painter's masking tape and newspaper, mask off inside area of shelf. Spray two coats of Saddle Tan on top and bottom of shelf. Let dry thoroughly between coats.
- Using painter's masking tape and newspaper, mask off top and bottom shelves. Spray two coats of Leather Brown on sides of shelf, back and sides of hardboard. Let dry thoroughly between coats.
- Using painter's masking tape and newspaper, mask off remaining exposed areas of shelf leaving spindles exposed. Spray three coats of Gloss White on spindles. Let dry thoroughly between coats. Remove all masking.
- Using a ruler and scissors, measure and cut papers into six squares to fit back of shelf. Spray back of paper squares with spray adhesive and arrange as desired on Ballet Slipper side of hardboard and smooth down.
- Using scissors, cut beaded trim to the length of top panel. Turn shelf upside down. Using thick craft glue, secure ribbon part of trim onto top edge of panel so the beads will flip down once turned upright.
- Using scissors, cut desired paper to fit front panel of shelf. Spray back of paper with spray adhesive and smooth down onto front panel over ribbon of beaded trim. Turn shelf upright so beads flip down over paper.
- Using a drill with a 1/16" bit, drill three holes on each long side of hardboard in top corner, middle and bottom corner. Lay shelf flat with backside facing up. Place hardboard over back of shelf. Place a finish nail in one pre-drilled hole and pound in with hammer. Repeat for remaining pre-drilled holes.
Approximate project time: 4 hours.
