Mailbox

It's the first thing people see. Make a great first impression with this fast and easy project that anyone can do. Whether your mailbox is wood, metal, or plastic, Krylon has what you need to complete this project.

What you need:

Note: If you desire a natural wood finish, use 1 can Krylon Semi-Transparent Wood Stain. If you desire a solid color painted finish, use 1 can Krylon Fusion.

  • 1 can Krylon Spray Product
  • Drop Cloth
  • Medium grit sandpaper
  • Masking tape
  • Tack cloth or lint free rag
  • Bleach solution (optional)

How and How Long:

Note: If you are staining on top of a previously stained surface, make sure the new stain will penetrate before starting your project. To test, splash a few drops of water on the surface. If the water penetrates, so will the stain. If it does not, try sanding the surface and perform the splash test again.

  1. Clean mailbox and post to remove dirt and debris. If mildew is present, clean with a solution of bleach and water.
  2. If working with a metal or wood mailbox, lightly sand the surface to ensure a smooth finish. Remove sanding residue with a tack cloth or lint free rag. (No sanding is necessary for a plastic mailbox when using Krylon Fusion.)
  3. Mask off any areas that you do not want to spray (ex. Mailbox flag or address numbers).
  4. Cover surrounding areas with drop cloth to protect from overspray.
  5. Following instructions on can, apply stain or paint. You may only need to apply one coat of the stain. Apply additional coats of stain for a deeper color. Multiple thin coats work best when painting with Fusion.
  6. Remove masking tape.
Approximate project time: 1 hour.

What it Costs:

Approximate cost is $5 - $10.
