Exterior Shutters

Boost your home's curb appeal with this easy project. Revitalize your shutters with a fresh coat of paint to not only beautify your home, but attract prospective buyers as well.

What you need:

  • 1 can Krylon Fusion for Plastic, per approximately 4 shutters, in desired color
  • Ammonia-based cleaner or paint thinner
  • Drop cloth or newspaper
  • Screwdriver

How and How Long:

  1. Remove shutters and lay them flat on a work surface protected with newspapers or a drop cloth.
  2. Using an ammonia-based cleaner, wipe down each shutter to remove any dust or particles. If the shutter is new and plastic, wipe down with paint thinner for best results.
  3. Following the instructions on the can, spray the sides of the shutters first. Apply multiple thin coats to avoid runs and drips. Let shutters dry until they are dry to the touch.
  4. Next, spray the front of the shutters. Holding the can 8-10 inches away from the surface, spray in a sweeping motion from side to side, applying multiple thin coats. Let shutters dry until they are dry to the touch.
  5. (Optional) Turn shutters over and repeat Step 4. It is not necessary to paint the backs of the shutters since they will not be visible when attached to the house.
  6. Fusion dries in 15 minutes or less, and can be handled in about 1 hour. We recommend keeping newly painted shutters inside a garage or shed for 7 days to become fully chip and scratch resistant. *Note: If you are planning to change the color of the shutters, it's best to choose a color that is similar in value to the current color of the shutters. We do not recommend changing from a light color to a dark color because this could make the vinyl absorb more heat and may cause the shutters to buckle.

Approximate project time: 1.5 - 2 hours.

What it Costs:

Approximate cost is $15 - 25.
