A fresh coat of paint on a well-used basketball hoop will ensure that your family's favorite game appeals to every buyer.

What you need:

  • 1 can Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Primer in a color close to your paint color
  • 2 cans Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Paint in desired colors Ladder Drop cloth or newspaper
  • Wire brush or steel wool
  • Sandpaper
  • Tack cloth
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Masking tape
  • Screwdriver (optional)

*For fiberglass, we recommend using Krylon Fusion and following the instructions on the can.

How and How Long:

  1. Position ladder in a place that will allow easy access to the pole and to the backboard. Cover surrounding area with newspaper or a drop cloth to protect from overspray.
  2. To prep the surface of the pole: Remove loose rust, chipped paint, dirt and grime with a wire brush or steel wool pad. Lightly sand glossy or rough areas and remove dust with a tack cloth.
  3. To prep the surface of the backboard: Use a screwdriver to remove the basketball hoop or mask with newspaper and tape. Clean dirt and any loose paint from the surface. Sand imperfections smooth and wipe clean with a tack cloth.
  4. Following the instructions on the can, apply the primer to the pole and to the backboard. Apply multiple thin coats instead of one heavy coat.
  5. To paint the pole: mask off the backboard and following the instructions on the can, apply several light coats of Krylon Indoor/Outdoor. Use short sweeping strokes to avoid runs and drips. Let dry.
  6. To paint the backboard: Wait at least 1 hour for the paint on the pole to dry and mask off the pole to protect from overspray. Following the instructions on the can, apply several light coats of Krylon Indoor/Outdoor paint to the backboard. Remove all masking and let dry.
Approximate project time: 2 hours.
