Houndstooth Mirror

Using an inexpensive door mirror, some plywood, wood blocks and a little decoupage, you can make a stunning wall mirror for any room in the house.

What you need:

  • (1) can Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Watermelon spray paint
  • (1) can Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Semi-Gloss Black spray paint
  • (1) Full length door mirror
  • (1) Piece of plywood cut about an inch and a half bigger on all sides of the mirror
  • (1) 1'x2' piece of plywood cut into a bunch of small squares
  • Wood Glue
  • Gorilla Glue
  • Hook Clamps
  • Mod Podge
  • (2) sheets of Houndstooth pattern
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Optional: vinyl letters

How and How Long:

  1. Clean mirror really well and apply the optional vinyl letters.
  2. Remove mirror from frame and then spray both the frame and the plywood with the Watermelon spray paint until well coated. Allow time to dry.
  3. Using Gorilla Glue attach the mirror to the center of the plywood and then using the wood glue attach the frame around the mirror. Clamp the frame on to the plywood and allow time to dry.
  4. Using the black spray paint coat all of the small black squares until well covered. Allow time to dry.
  5. Cut Scrapbook paper into 1 1/2 inch squares and then mod podge them on to the black squares.
  6. For my mirror I decided to give it some randomness and not do a complete frame all the way around, so I put some strips of the paper around the mirror and then wood glued on some of the blocks to make a frame around the entire mirror.
  7. Attach a hook on either side of the mirror on the bottom using the screws that come with them and hang on the wall.
Approximate project time: 2 hours.

What it Costs:

Cost is $20 for spray paint and materials.
